Major, a Patterdale terrier who suffered horrific injuries during an incident of badger persecution in Derbyshire, has become the inspiration behind a new nationwide initiative, Operation Major. The initiative, launched today, aims to raise awareness of dogs injured or maimed through illegal wildlife crime and to improve reporting and prevention of these offenses.
The incident that led to Major’s injuries sparked outrage and a collaborative effort between Naturewatch Foundation, the League Against Cruel Sports, Badger Trust, the RSPCA, and veterinary professionals. The aim of Operation Major is to protect wildlife, safeguard dogs, and ensure that perpetrators of these crimes face justice.
Jim Clark, Wildlife Crime Campaign Manager at Naturewatch Foundation, stated, “Through Operation Major, we hope to bring much-needed protection to all animals affected by these barbaric practices. We are proud to join forces with our partners to drive this vital project forward.”
The initiative brings together various stakeholders, including the public, police forces, NGOs, and veterinary professionals, to work towards its objectives. These include raising awareness of wildlife crime and encouraging the reporting of suspicious injuries or activity in rural areas. It also aims to improve recognition of wildlife crime indicators by police officers and strengthen vigilance among veterinary professionals in identifying potential wildlife-crime-related injuries.
DC Aaron Flint, from Derbyshire Constabulary, emphasized the importance of increased awareness in bringing these hidden crimes to light. “By working closely with policing teams, NGOs, professionals such as vets, and the public, we want to improve the recognition and reporting of these incidents,” he said. “Every report helps us protect vulnerable animals, safeguard communities, and bring offenders to justice.”
The public is encouraged to report any concerns about dogs being used in the commission of wildlife crime through Naturewatch Foundation’s secure online reporting form. This information will be safely and confidentially shared with relevant authorities to support investigations and prevent cruelty towards animals.
