The Men’s Health Strategy for England is Embraced by UKMSA

The United Kingdom Men’s Sheds Association (UKMSA) has expressed their support for the launch of England’s first-ever Men’s Health Strategy, calling it a “landmark moment” that recognizes the importance of community-based and peer-led spaces in promoting men’s wellbeing. The strategy, which was released on Wednesday 19 November, 2025, highlights the positive impact that Men’s Sheds have on men’s lives.

With over a thousand Men’s Sheds operating across the UK, predominantly run by volunteers, these safe and welcoming spaces provide men with the opportunity to connect, create, and converse, ultimately improving their overall wellbeing. This approach, often referred to as “health by stealth”, has gained popularity amongst men nationwide, resulting in a growing demand for more Sheds.

Caroline Ellis, CEO of UKMSA, emphasizes the crucial role of supporting individuals to start new Sheds in order to meet this demand. She states, “Every Shed in the UK exists because people have created it in their local community, and we urgently need more people with the skills and confidence to set up Sheds, so every man who wants to attend one can do so.” Ellis also praises the Government’s focus on prevention and community-based support, and looks forward to collaborating with local communities, partners, and policymakers to open more Sheds.

Eddy Flynn, a member of Bootle Men’s Shed, shares his personal experience with the positive impact of Men’s Sheds on mental health. He explains, “Mental health is often discussed without stigma in Sheds. We all understand that it is a part of daily life. Spending a couple of hours sanding and sawing can increase physical activity, rather than sitting alone and watching TV. Men’s Sheds are a simple solution to a complex need, building community as well as bird boxes.”
