“Industry Leaders Rejoice: The Chartered Institute of Brewers & Distillers Introduces Enhanced Master Brewer and Master Distiller Programs”

CIBD Announces Launch of Updated Master Brewer and Master Distiller Qualifications

London, UK – The Chartered Institute of Brewers & Distillers (CIBD) is pleased to unveil the newest versions of its highest level of qualifications, Master Brewer and Master Distiller. The institute, known for its expertise in developing education in the sciences of brewing, distillation, and associated areas worldwide, has worked closely with business leaders, Learning & Development professionals, academics, and Masters candidates to create programmes that meet the evolving needs of the industry.

Through extensive engagement with industry experts, the CIBD has identified key topics such as sustainability, digitisation, continual improvement, and critical thinking as crucial for success in the brewing and distilling operations of today and the future. As a result, the updated Master qualifications will now include these topics, ensuring that candidates are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in the industry.

To guarantee the high standards of the new Master programmes, the CIBD has collaborated with a group of leading experts to write specialist content for the revised syllabi. A second group of industry professionals and academics were also involved in a peer review process to ensure that the content is relevant to the current industry skills and role requirements.

In addition to significant content changes, the new Master programmes will also be assessed differently. Candidates will now undergo a combination of controlled assignments, formal examinations, and the creation of an ‘evidence of learning’ portfolio. The final step will be a viva with industry experts who will assess each candidate’s skills, knowledge, and overall readiness to obtain the CIBD Master level qualification and take on key roles in the workplace.

Deborah Kennedy, Chair of the Board of Examiners at CIBD, who has led the development of the two new Master programmes for the past 18 months, commented: “Today’s senior brewers and distillers must have a deep understanding of the latest technological advancements in their field. However, technical knowledge and competence alone are no longer sufficient for success. A successful leader must also possess the ability to operationalise and lead across the end-to-end value chain.”

Kennedy went on to explain that the new qualifications will test candidates’ application and leadership skills, with elective options to strengthen expertise, and new assessment methodologies to measure their readiness to lead in the workplace. “Knowledge of disciplines such as finance, procurement, and governance, combined with an understanding of digital and AI technologies, sustainability, and operational excellence, will set our Master candidates apart in their careers,” she added.

Dr Megan Sheehy, President of CIBD, also expressed her appreciation for the input and support from industry and academia in shaping the new syllabi. “The new programmes have been developed by the industry, for the industry, to meet current and future needs. This launch is a testament to our commitment to continually raising the standards of scientific, technical, and operational understanding in the industry,” she said.
