New Medicash Report Shows Under-45s Prioritise Skin Health – But Tanning Trends Remain Strong

Last Updated on:

Fresh research from Medicash has revealed that younger UK adults are taking the lead on skin health awareness, yet many still engage in tanning despite potential risks.

The study, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Medicash and surveying 2,000 UK adults, found that Gen Z and Millennials (aged 18-44) are significantly more proactive than older generations when it comes to protecting and monitoring their skin.

Among younger respondents, there was a stronger concern about skin cancer, greater use of sun safety practices like SPF and shade-seeking, and higher confidence (48%) in recognising unusual or dangerous moles compared with older participants.

Two in five adults aged 18-44 reported checking their skin at least once per month for irregularities, compared with just three in ten people aged 45 and over. Younger generations also demonstrated a greater appetite for skin health knowledge, with 31% using online resources and 25% turning to social media for information.

Experts link this shift to the growth of “skinfluencers” and the flourishing skincare market. Trends such as the “clean aesthetic,” which celebrates fresh, natural-looking skin, appear to be encouraging younger consumers to focus on skin health alongside personal appearance.

However, despite heightened awareness, the report highlights a paradox: 55% of 18-44-year-olds intentionally tan, compared to only 28% of those aged over 45.

To support early detection, Medicash offers all policyholders free access to SkinVision, a CE-certified app powered by AI and dermatologist expertise. Users can photograph a mole or skin spot to receive a fast risk assessment, empowering them to seek appropriate medical advice if needed.

Andrew Healy MBE, CEO of Medicash, commented: “It’s encouraging to see younger people embracing skin health checks and sun protection, but there’s still work to do when it comes to reducing risky tanning habits. Our partnership with SkinVision ensures policyholders have instant, expert-backed tools at their fingertips – helping them take action quickly and potentially saving lives.”

Since its launch in summer 2020, SkinVision has supported Medicash policyholders in conducting over 255,000 skin scans, identifying nearly 1,400 clinically validated cases of skin cancer.

One notable example is Melanie, who noticed a mole on her shin changing shape. Using the SkinVision app provided via her Medicash health plan, she received a high-risk assessment. Following its guidance, she consulted her GP, was referred to a dermatologist, and diagnosed with stage 1 melanoma. Her prompt action led to successful early treatment.

Erik de Heus, CEO of SkinVision, added: “Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, but also one of the most treatable when caught early. Through our partnership with Medicash, we’ve been able to help thousands of people take control of their skin health, supporting early detection that often leads to less complex treatments and reduces the pressure on healthcare professionals in these busy times.”

“Melanie’s story is a powerful reminder of how quick action and accessible technology can make all the difference.”
