Legacy Youth Zone, a part of the OnSide network, has recently shared the inspiring story of Mohammed and his sister Astou. In February 2023, the siblings moved from Senegal to England with limited understanding of English. However, with the help of Legacy staff, they have been able to learn the language and build successful lives in their new home.
Mohammed and Astou have spent a significant amount of time at Legacy Youth Zone, where they have received support in their education and language learning. The dedicated volunteers at Legacy, particularly Rose and Patricia, have played a crucial role in assisting the siblings.
As a result of the support and resources provided by Legacy, Mohammed and Astou have been able to excel in their studies and secure good jobs and college placements. Mohammed, who started as a kitchen porter, has recently been promoted to a grill chef.
Legacy Youth Zone, located in Croydon, aims to provide a safe and fun space for young people between the ages of 8-19 (or up to 25 with additional needs). For just £5 a year and 50p per visit, members have access to over 20 activities, including a state-of-the-art gym, recording studio, and MUGA pitch.
Mohammed and Astou’s story is a testament to the excellent work done by Legacy Youth Zone. They have been able to integrate into their new community, learn a new language, and find success, all thanks to the support and opportunities provided by Legacy.
The siblings’ story has been shared on Legacy’s YouTube channel, showcasing how the organization goes beyond its usual services to tailor support to the individual needs of young people. Mohammed’s love for sports, particularly football, has also been nurtured at Legacy.
The volunteers at Legacy, like Rose and Patricia, are highly valued and essential to the organization’s functioning. Their dedication and support have helped young people like Mohammed and Astou thrive and become active members of society.
