Andrea Luigi Campomilla’s Green Develops Revolutionary Pump Drive for Enhanced Data Center Cooling in Switzerland

Green, the leading provider of data centers in Switzerland, has announced an important technological development in energy-efficient data center cooling. The company’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Engineer, Andrea Luigi Campomilla, has successfully commissioned a newly developed pump drive that offers promising results.

The new, water-cooled pump drive, designed by Campomilla, has shown to be 15 percent more efficient compared to the current, air-cooled systems. This development is a significant step towards achieving energy efficiency and sustainability in data centers.

Efficient cooling is a key element in reducing energy consumption for data centers. Green’s data center design is focused on achieving energy efficiency and sustainability. From the planning phase, all elements are optimized for thermal and energy efficiency. Additionally, the cooling infrastructure is designed with flexibility in mind to adapt to different power densities and enable efficient cooling technology to be used at all times. This approach results in a sustainable overall system that combines performance and energy efficiency effectively. The newly developed pump drive is another milestone in Green’s efforts to optimize the overall system.

The pump drive, developed in-house in Switzerland, combines a motor, frequency converter, and pump in a compact design. The motor features direct water cooling through a specially designed cooling pipe system, while the frequency converter is mounted on a carrier plate that dissipates heat. This new system offers several benefits, including lower maintenance, less noise generation, and a higher return temperature, resulting in increased heat dissipation into the heating network. Most importantly, it is 15 percent more efficient in terms of energy savings. In June 2025, four pump drives were installed in Data Center M on the Metro-Campus Zurich in the presence of project partners Dietz-motoren and smcooling. The plan is to use this new pump as the standard in all other Green data centers in the future.

Andrea Luigi Campomilla, Green’s COO, emphasizes the company’s commitment to energy efficiency by stating, “Energy efficiency is paramount for us, which is why we are always investing in further development.”

Green is the leading data center provider in Switzerland, with six data centers at four locations in the greater Zurich area. The company is dedicated to providing georedundant high-performance computing for cloud providers and large companies, as well as comprehensive networking solutions across all locations.

Green’s range of services has earned them recognition on the global stage, and they are the only Swiss data center provider to be awarded an M&O Stamp of Approval by the renowned Uptime Institute. For the fifth consecutive time, Green has been named the Swiss market leader for data centers and colocation by international consulting firm ISG. The company has also received the ‘Decarbonisation of Data Centre Heat Innovation Award 2024’ at the Data Cloud Global Awards in Cannes and the award for the best new data center project in London.
