EU-funded DARE project chooses Codasip to develop advanced RISC-V processor design

Europe’s leader in RISC-V technology, Codasip, has been selected to provide a highly customizable general-purpose processor for the €240 million European supercomputing project, Digital Autonomy with RISC-V in Europe (DARE). The announcement was made on Thursday, March 6, 2025, in Munich, Germany.

DARE aims to develop a supercomputing compute stack utilizing high-performance and energy-efficient RISC-V-based processors and accelerators designed and developed in Europe. The project has received funding of 240 million Euros from the European Union for its first 3-year phase. The selected partners will work together to achieve competitive performance and efficiency through hardware/software co-design.

With funding from the project, Codasip will design a RISC-V-based General-Purpose Processor (GPP) that can be configured and customized for various HPC-class applications. The company is well-suited for this task, with a fully Europe-based development team and an innovative Custom Compute approach.

Codasip’s product portfolio currently includes a range of 32-bit low-power embedded to 64-bit application core families, some with optional safety and security features such as the advanced memory protection technology CHERI. The company’s processor design toolset, Codasip Studio, allows for extensive hardware/software co-optimization and customization for application-specific needs. Through the DARE project, Codasip will expand its product portfolio to include offerings for high-end applications such as AI, big data processing, and supercomputing.

Karel Masarik, Codasip Founder and Chief Innovation Officer, expressed excitement about being a part of the largest chip development project ever funded by the European Union, stating that “the development efficiency of our Custom Compute offering means we can do more with less compared to less powerful legacy approaches.” He also highlighted the value of Codasip’s technology in strengthening the European semiconductor industry and the benefits of working with a network of European companies on advanced technologies.

Digital Autonomy with RISC-V in Europe (DARE) has received funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 101202459.
