SOS Africa Plans 160ft Charity Abseil Fundraiser at Stourhead’s King Alfred’s Tower

Shepton Mallet based charity, SOS Africa, has announced plans to host a charity abseil event at the iconic King Alfred’s Tower in Stourhead. The event, which will take place over two weekends on September 27th/28th and October 4th/5th, 2025, is expected to be the charity’s highest fundraising event yet.

Courtesy of the National Trust Stourhead, SOS Africa’s King Alfred’s Tower Charity Abseil will give the general public a unique opportunity to abseil from this historic landmark. The event is back by popular demand after the charity’s successful abseil event in September 2023, which raised an impressive £41,000 for SOS Africa and Stourhead.

During the four-day event, brave participants from across the Southwest and beyond will climb the tower’s 205 steps before descending from the top in support of the charity’s cause. The event promises breathtaking views of the surrounding counties for all participants.

To take part, abseilers must pay a £20 deposit to cover Aardvark Endeavours Instructors fees and raise a minimum of £50. Interested individuals or teams can contact Event Organiser Matt Crowcombe via email at matt@sosafrica.com to register. They must provide their full name, email address, preferred abseil time and date (9am-5pm on September 27th/28th or October 4th/5th), and transfer a £20 deposit per abseiler to SOS Africa’s account.

Once registered, Matt will confirm the abseil date and time, set up an online fundraising page for the participants, and add it to the Event Fundraising Page. This will allow participants to track their progress and the total amount raised by all abseilers. No previous abseiling experience is required, but participants must be at least nine years old (under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). While enough time will be given for participants to climb the 205 steps, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
