Succession Star and Highly Praised Scottish Actor Endorses Scotland’s Push to Become the First “Rewilding Nation”

Scottish actor Brian Cox CBE has joined the call for Scotland to be declared the world’s first “Rewilding Nation.” The acclaimed actor, known for his roles in Succession and Shetland, is urging people to support the Scottish Rewilding Alliance’s Rewilding Nation Charter, which calls for 30% of Scotland’s land and seas to be restored to nature.

Cox’s support comes just days before the Alliance, a coalition of over 20 organizations, presents its vision for a Rewilding Nation to the Scottish Government at a reception in Edinburgh on Tuesday 3 December.

In a letter published in The Guardian on November 25, the 78-year-old Dundee-born actor expressed concern over Scotland’s loss of nature, stating that “Scotland is one of the planet’s most nature-depleted countries.” He also highlighted the growing movement for nature recovery in Scotland, saying that “we now have more than 150 rewilding projects across the country, with hundreds of people working to put things right again.”

Cox urges readers to stand with their fellow Scots and support the Rewilding Nation Charter, which calls on the Scottish Government to declare Scotland the first Rewilding Nation and take urgent action to make it happen. Steve Micklewight, Co-Convenor of the Scottish Rewilding Alliance and Chief Executive of Trees for Life, praised Cox for adding his voice to the vision of hope. Micklewight emphasized that rewilding 30% of Scotland can be achieved by restoring habitats such as peatlands, native woodlands, wetlands, rivers, and seas, while still maintaining productive farmland.

The campaign for a Rewilding Nation has received widespread support from individuals and organizations across Scotland, including Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio, who publicly backed the initiative in April of this year.

The Scottish Rewilding Alliance is calling on people from all walks of life to sign the Rewilding Nation Charter at rewild.scot/charter. The Charter aims to tackle the nature and climate emergencies while also creating a wealth of benefits for people, such as jobs, health, sustainable food, clean air and water, thriving communities, and re-peopling.
