Stanley Chow collaborates with Big Issue North to release festive socks, cards, and wrapping paper

On Wednesday 3 December 2025, Big Issue North announced their annual collaboration with Manchester artist Stanley Chow and sock company Stand4Socks. This partnership has resulted in a limited-edition collection of festive socks, Christmas cards, and wrapping paper, all with a charitable twist.

The exclusive designs are not only perfect for keeping warm and spreading holiday cheer, but also for supporting those in need across the north of England. Each purchase directly contributes to Big Issue North’s mission of empowering people experiencing poverty to earn an income, gain stability, and transform their lives.

Big Issue North vendors, who are self-employed, buy magazines for £2 each from regional offices in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, and Sheffield, and sell them on established pitches for £4. They keep the £2 profit from each sale, which not only provides them with an income but also motivates them and boosts their self-esteem.

In addition to selling the magazine, vendors receive support and guidance from staff to access services such as skill development, English language courses, and assistance with housing, finances, and health. This helps them achieve their goals and improve their lives for the better.

It is important to note that 75% of vendors in the north have never resorted to begging, and 19% of vendors who had previously committed crime have reported offending less, or even stopping entirely, since selling the magazine.

Big Issue North Trust, a registered charity (charity number 1056041), raises funds to provide various forms of support to vendors, including access to services, assistance with obtaining identification, and furnishing packages for their homes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the trust also provided financial aid to vendors while they were unable to work, as well as funding for personal protective equipment (PPE) and contactless payment devices, along with the necessary photo ID to use them. This not only improved the safety of vendors and customers but also increased earnings as the UK moves towards becoming a cashless society.

This year’s collection includes two new exclusive designs by Stanley Chow. Known for his iconic illustrations, Chow has collaborated with various renowned brands, from The White Stripes to The New York Times. His signature style is reflected in the graphic, minimalist pixel design and penguin design featured in the limited-edition sock series.

“I got the chance to design the pair of socks I’ve always wanted to wear, and selling them will help raise money for a charity that I wholeheartedly support. What’s not to like about that?!” said Stanley Chow.

The socks are priced at £12.99 per pair or £29.99 for three pairs, while the Christmas cards and wrapping paper are priced at £6 for 10 cards or five sheets of wrapping paper, and £10 for a set of cards and wrapping paper. All profits from each sale go directly to Big Issue North, supporting individuals in the North West, Yorkshire, and the Humber who sell The Big Issue. This provides them with the opportunity to earn an income, develop skills, and gain independence.

Stand4Socks, a Manchester-based company, is known for their high-quality, personalized socks. Their ethos revolves around giving back, and for every pair of charity socks sold, they donate a durable, antibacterial pair to someone experiencing homelessness. To date, Stand4Socks has donated over 150,000 socks, ensuring that comfort and warmth reach those who need it most.
