Honoring the Legacy of Roger Hayward: A Musical Tribute to an Extraordinary Journey

Sheffield Chamber Orchestra Pays Tribute to Late Founding Member

Sheffield, UK – On Monday 17 November, 2025, the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra announced that their upcoming concert on 29 November will be dedicated to the memory of Roger Hayward, who passed away in October of the same year at the age of almost 97. Hayward, a devoted member of the orchestra, was not only the first Chairman of the ensemble, but also one of its longest-serving players.

Hayward’s connection to the orchestra ran deep, as he arrived in Sheffield to study Metallurgy at the university and brought his violin with him. Under the direction of Professor Stuart Deas, the fledgling orchestra took shape and Hayward’s commitment helped lay the foundations for what would eventually become the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra. It was there, among the second violins, that he met Kathleen Gabbitas, who would become his wife in 1955. Together, they raised three children and shared a love for music, rehearsing every week and performing in concert after concert.

Hayward’s loyalty and musicianship were unmatched, as he played with the orchestra for at least 50 years. Although Gabbitas stepped back from performing earlier, she remained a part of the SCO family, attending concerts and offering her help wherever needed. Even after they both retired from performing, their love for classical music remained, and they could often be seen at concerts around Sheffield, particularly at the Crucible Theatre.

Aside from his passion for music, Hayward cherished his family life, which was enriched by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed spending time walking in the beautiful landscapes of the region. After Gabbitas’ passing in 2022, Hayward spent his final years in a retirement home, but his warm, curious, and generous spirit remained with him until the end.

As the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra prepares for their November concert, they remember Hayward with deep gratitude. His enthusiasm, dedication, and quiet leadership helped shape the orchestra into what it is today. It is a privilege for them to honor his memory at this performance.

Hayward’s legacy will be celebrated at the orchestra’s 75th anniversary concert, which will take place at 7.30pm on Saturday 29th November at All Saints Church, Ecclesall. The concert will feature works by Mendelssohn, Wagner, and Telemann, as well as the world premiere of a new piece by British composer Dominic McGonigal.
