New Short Course on Whisk(e)y Production Launched by The Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers

The Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers (CIBD) has announced the launch of a new technical short course in Whisk(e)y Production. As a highly respected provider of technical education in the distilling industry, the CIBD aims to equip distillers of all levels with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their craft.

The Whisk(e)y Production course, part of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) series, is designed for distillers producing whisk(e)y in distilleries of all sizes. It offers a comprehensive understanding of all stages of the production process, from raw materials to blending.

Developed in collaboration with leading distillers and spirits experts, such as Billy Mitchell, Ian Thorn, Chris Thomson, and Kim Møller-Elshøj, the course covers topics such as raw materials, fermentation, distillation, maturation, and blending. It also provides insights on how to assess and analyze whiskies using laboratory and sensory methods.

One of the key advantages of this course is that it does not require a formal exam, yet provides the same level of technical excellence found in all CIBD qualifications. Upon completion, learners will receive a Certificate of Completion and a downloadable PDF containing technical information such as key points of the course, significance of production analyses, and key calculations for whisk(e)y production.

The course features a mix of text, videos, animations, quizzes, and online games to enhance the learning experience. Ed Wray, Technical Development Manager for distilling, explains the significance of this course, saying, “This short course provides in-depth scientific and technical information specifically about whisk(e)y production. It is written in collaboration with experts in the field and with the technical rigour and accuracy that you expect from the CIBD. If you want to gain an understanding of whisk(e)y production from grain to glass, or you want to optimise your whisk(e)y production processes, then this is the course for you!”

The course is set to launch on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, and will be available at https://www.cibd.org.uk/. Join thousands of distillers worldwide and enhance your skills with the CIBD Whisk(e)y Production course.
