Global Survey Initiated to Enhance Understanding of Reuse Practitioners Following INC 5.2 Stalemate

Negotiations at the INC 5.2 conference have collapsed, leading to a missed opportunity in tackling the issue of plastic waste. The conference was focused on setting production limits and implementing effective solutions for dealing with plastic waste.

One of the most widely recognized solutions to plastic waste is reuse. By replacing single-use models with refillable, returnable, or packaging-free systems, the amount of plastic waste produced can be greatly reduced. However, there is a lack of understanding among policymakers and a lack of representation of reuse practitioners in the decision-making process.

To bridge this gap, the REUSE Foundation has launched the Global Reuse Practitioners Survey. This is the first-ever effort to gather insights from those actively implementing reuse practices in various markets and contexts, from large multinational supply chains to local community schemes.

The survey will focus on identifying operational barriers and opportunities for scaling reuse, policy and regulatory measures that can accelerate adoption, effective financial and business models, and key lessons learned from practitioners on the ground.

According to Roger Sharp, Trustee of the REUSE Foundation, the absence of reuse practitioners in global discussions creates a disconnect between policy goals and practical implementation. By gathering these insights, the foundation aims to inform future strategies with real-world experience.

The results of the survey will be published in a global report later this year, providing guidance to policymakers, industry leaders, and civil society on enabling conditions for scaling reuse.

All reuse practitioners from various sectors are invited to participate in the survey, which can be found here.
