National Allotment Society Launches National Allotments Week 2025 to Promote Wellbeing
Tuesday 12 August, 2025 – The National Allotment Society is excited to announce the start of National Allotments Week 2025 (11–17 August), dedicated to highlighting the crucial role that allotments play in promoting physical, mental, and nutritional wellbeing for individuals across the UK.
This year’s theme, “Allotments and Wellbeing,” aims to showcase the diverse benefits that allotments offer beyond just being a place to grow food. In conjunction with this theme, the Society is releasing new findings from a national survey that demonstrate how allotments serve as vital lifelines for community connection, physical activity, and mental health support, particularly in a time of increased stress, food insecurity, and limited green spaces.
Some key findings from the survey include:
– 88.1% of plot holders reported that allotments have positively impacted their physical health, rating them 8 or above on a scale of 1-10.
– 62.9% gave a perfect 10/10 for the mental health benefits of having an allotment.
– 80.3% stated that their allotment has helped them build social connections.
– 89.2% reported that they eat more fresh fruits and vegetables as a result of growing their own produce.
According to Mike Farrell, Chairman of the National Allotment Society, “An allotment isn’t just a piece of land – it’s a sanctuary, a source of pride, and a powerful tool for public health. We are calling on policymakers, councils, and planners to recognize the value that allotments bring to communities and ensure their protection for future generations.”
In addition, the Society is urging local authorities to invest in allotment infrastructure, improve access in underserved areas, and collaborate with schools, charities, and social prescribing networks to further promote allotment use.
During National Allotments Week, various events and member webinars will highlight the benefits of allotment life, including growing your own produce and forming new friendships. A comprehensive breakdown of the National Allotment Survey 2025 is now available on the NAS website.
