Discover the Capabilities of a Single-Speed Folding Ebike on the Commute to Mount Snowdon with the FLIT M2

FLIT, a leading ebike developer based in Cambridge, has recently released a new video showcasing their latest product, the FLIT M2. In an ambitious test, the company took the folding ebike on an “extreme commute” to the summit of Mount Snowdon, Wales’ highest peak.

According to FLIT Co-founder Alex Murray, the purpose of this challenge was to dispel the misconception that small-wheeled bikes are not suitable for rough terrain or do not provide a proper riding experience. “The truth is that they are much better than most people think,” says Murray, “but it’s a trade-off.” While small wheels offer agility and quick acceleration, larger wheels are better for sustained effort and handling obstacles. FLIT wanted to showcase the versatility and durability of the M2 by completing a commute that would leave no doubt about its capabilities.

The video captures the FLIT M2 navigating various terrains, from town streets to the peak of Mount Snowdon. It not only highlights the bike’s performance but also celebrates the joys of slow travel, the ingenuity behind ebike design, and the beauty of taking the road less travelled.

The FLIT M2 boasts several features that make it surprisingly capable in diverse conditions. Unlike many folding bikes, it is designed from scratch to be both folding and electric, with its electronics and battery seamlessly integrated into the frame for a balanced and stable ride. Additionally, its rear hub motor and torque sensor allow for proportional assistance based on the rider’s pedal power, making it suitable for climbing hills.

The M2’s frame is also built using a unique adhesive bonding process, similar to that used in the aerospace and automotive industries. This results in a precise and stiff frame that is 25% more compact and 1kg lighter than welded equivalents. Its hard-wearing anodised finish and internally routed cables further contribute to its clean look and resilience.

The ebike also features upgraded components, including hydraulic disc brakes for superior control in all weather conditions, and Schwalbe Marathon tyres for robust grip and puncture protection. What’s more, the FLIT team designs, prototypes, tests, and assembles the M2 in Cambridge, making it a truly British product.

While the Snowdon climb was a dramatic demonstration, the message behind it is serious: small-wheeled ebikes like the FLIT M2 are genuinely capable when designed well. “We’ve designed the FLIT M2 to handle all of the journeys we want to do, and some of our team are quite adventurous!” says Murray. “This makes us very confident that it can handle anything thrown at it during a regular commute.”

The FLIT M2 is available for purchase in the UK at £2,499, and the company works with all major cycle to work schemes. Customers can also visit the Cambridge workshop for a test ride or visit FLIT’s London partner, Zelo (Fix Your Cycle), at their Hackney or White City shops.
