Siriraj Hospital Launches Perinatal Mental Health Research Project with Backing from Pranaiya & Arthur Magoffin Foundation

“Landmark Perinatal Mental Health Study Launched at Siriraj Hospital, Supported by Pranaiya & Arthur Magoffin Foundation”

Bangkok, Thailand – 22 July 2025 – Siriraj Hospital, the oldest and largest public hospital in Thailand, has embarked on a groundbreaking research study focused on perinatal mental health. Titled “Prevalence and Factors Associated with Depression in Pregnant and Postpartum Women: A Prospective Cohort Study of Siriraj Hospital,” the study aims to shed light on the scope and causes of depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Led by Assistant Professor Dr. Keerati Pattanaseri, the study brings together a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, obstetrician-gynaecologists, and paediatricians. Spanning two years, it is one of the most comprehensive efforts to address perinatal depression in Thailand.

The Pranaiya & Arthur Magoffin Foundation (PAM Foundation) is the driving force behind this research, dedicated to improving awareness, care, and research around maternal mental health.

PAM Foundation founder, Hamish Magoffin, expressed his gratitude to the researchers and participants involved in the study, saying, “We would like to thank those researchers who are undertaking the study for their interest in this overlooked topic, and also a thank you to those participants who are willing to present their issues as part of the research and wish them all the best.”

Despite affecting up to one in six mothers worldwide, postpartum depression remains underdiagnosed and undertreated, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Stigma, underfunding, and limited mental health services are significant barriers in these regions. This study aims to generate vital local data to inform policy, training, and early intervention practices in Thailand.

Siriraj Hospital, founded in 1888, is known for its excellence in patient care, education, and innovation. It serves as the primary teaching hospital of Mahidol University and is widely recognized as the country’s leading academic and medical research institution.

The PAM Foundation, established in Thailand, the UK, and the US, was founded in memory of Pranaiya and Arthur and continues their legacy by addressing perinatal mental health conditions through three pillars: awareness and education, care, and research.
