Conference brings together experts to raise awareness about the final unprotected animal in UK legislation

Experts and professionals from various fields, including science, seafood industry, ocean conservation, and animal welfare, will gather for the first ever Crustacean Compassion Day on June 10, 2025. The event aims to raise awareness and promote better treatment for decapod crustaceans, such as lobsters, crabs, and prawns, who are currently not protected under UK law.

The Chief Executive Officer of Crustacean Compassion, Dr. Ben Sturgeon, explains the necessity of this event, stating that these animals are often subjected to cruel and painful practices from the moment they are caught until their death. He also highlights the fact that despite being recognized as sentient beings, they are still not protected from inhumane treatment.

The organization is calling for a “pincer movement,” encouraging individuals from all sectors and interest groups to join in and demand better treatment for decapod crustaceans. They stress that there are alternatives to current practices, and they have already seen improvements in welfare from supermarkets and restaurants that have implemented these alternatives.

In addition to webinars featuring experts in crustacean welfare, the day will also include a photo competition, the premier of a new video for children, creative and fun activities for all ages, and a prize giveaway. Crustacean Compassion ambassador, TV presenter, and animal activist, Wendy Turner-Webster, shares her support for the cause, stating that she has witnessed firsthand the cruelty faced by these animals and is proud to stand with Crustacean Compassion in demanding better treatment for them.

Crustaceans play a crucial role in the health of our oceans and are intelligent, sensitive creatures deserving of respect and care. Crustacean Compassion Day is a celebration of these animals and an opportunity to raise awareness about the issues they face in the food industry and in the wild. The organization invites everyone to join their pincer movement and make a difference for these extraordinary creatures. The event is distributed by https://pressat.co.uk/.
