On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Hamish Magoffin, a man who tragically lost his wife and baby son to postpartum depression, achieved a remarkable feat in Central Park. Magoffin set a new world running record by completing 19 circuits around the park, covering a distance of 187 kilometers (116 miles) in just 17 hours and 29 minutes. This significant date holds a special meaning for Magoffin, as it would have been his son Arthur’s fourth birthday.
Magoffin’s incredible run was not just about breaking records, but also about raising awareness and funds for postpartum depression (PPD) and perinatal mental health (PMH). He was supported by the PAM Foundation (Pranaiya & Arthur Magoffin Foundation), a nonprofit organization he founded to promote awareness, care, and research for these pressing issues. Magoffin, who was overwhelmed by the support from the NYC community, expressed his hopes that this run would bring more attention and resources towards perinatal mental health, providing much-needed support to families in need.
The run, which began at 6:05 a.m. at Tavern on the Green, the finish line for the New York Marathon, was tracked by Magoffin’s supporters through Garmin. He was also joined by members of the New York Athletic Club, Central Park Track Club, and Pirates of Sunrise, among others.
The story behind Magoffin’s quest is a heart-wrenching one. He and Pranaiya Oulapathorn met while studying in the UK in 2010 and were married in Thailand in 2017. After giving birth to Arthur in 2021, Pranaiya started experiencing postpartum anxiety, which later developed into postpartum depression. Sadly, despite the active support of her loving family and a desire to seek help, Pranaiya and Arthur passed away on September 1, 2021, due to PPD.
In memory of his wife and son, Magoffin established the PAM Foundation to address perinatal mental health issues. The foundation, which was initially founded in Thailand and the UK, focuses on three pillars: awareness and education, care, and research. Since its inception in 2021, the PAM Foundation has organized a photography exhibition, facilitated training for mental health professionals in Thailand, sponsored research projects at the University of Oxford and Siriraj Hospital, and collaborated with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and various Thai universities.
To further expand their work on perinatal mental health, the PAM Foundation, Inc. was recently established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the US. Those looking to support their cause can donate through the foundation’s website.
