German Courts Rule in Nichia’s Favor in Patent Infringement Suits Regarding Leading LEDs

Munich District Court Rules in Favor of Nichia Corporation in Patent Infringement Lawsuits Against Dominant Opto Technologies Sdn. Bhd.

On January 13 and 21, 2025, the Munich District Court in Germany issued two acknowledgment judgments in favor of Nichia Corporation (“Nichia”) in relation to patent infringement lawsuits filed against Malaysia-based LED manufacturer Dominant Opto Technologies Sdn. Bhd. (“Dominant”).

The lawsuits were based on Nichia’s patents EP2216834 and EP3267494, which protect core technology used in the automotive lighting and backlighting markets to achieve high luminance, reliability, and efficiency.

EP2216834 covers the use of CSP (Chip Scale Package) products, an essential technology for high-luminance LEDs, particularly in the automotive headlight and exterior lighting markets. Meanwhile, EP3267494 covers LEDs that achieve high reliability and efficiency in manufacturing, which is crucial for the automotive interior lighting and backlighting market.

Nichia’s automotive lighting and backlighting LEDs utilize these patented technologies to provide superior performance. The Munich District Court acknowledged Nichia’s claims of patent infringement and issued judgments in favor of Nichia, ordering the defendant Endrich Bauelemente Vertriebs GmbH, a German electronic components distributor, to cease sales, recall and destruct the infringing products, provide information and accounting, and compensate Nichia for damages.

Nichia’s patents also extend to other countries such as Japan, the U.S., the U.K., France, Italy, the Netherlands, China, India, Taiwan, Korea, Russia, and Brazil.

Nichia is committed to protecting its patents and other intellectual property rights and will take necessary actions against alleged infringers in any country. For further information, please contact Nichia Corporation’s Public Relations department at +81-884-22-2311 or fax +81-884-23-7717.
