“Zero Hero Commuters Drive 53,000 Greener Journeys Annually: Meet the Winners”

Mobilityways, a leading climate tech provider, has announced the winners of the inaugural Commute Zero Hero Awards on Thursday 13 February, 2025. The awards celebrate outstanding achievements in sustainable commuting by workplaces across the UK, with initiatives supporting over 53,000 individuals to make greener journeys in the last twelve months.

The winners were chosen from a pool of entries from both the public and private sectors, showcasing innovative projects that reduce carbon emissions and promote a culture of sustainability. Among the winners were Heathrow Airport, University Hospitals Dorset, and West Sussex County Council, recognised for their efforts in promoting sustainable travel.

Cllr Joy Dennis from West Sussex County Council expressed their commitment to making sustainable travel a safer and more accessible option for residents and visitors. She highlighted their Active Travel Strategy, which focuses on providing residents with the ability to walk, wheel, or cycle instead of using their cars for journeys, particularly to school and work.

Encirc, a leading glass manufacturer, was honoured with the Best Workplace Initiative Award for their car-share solution with a reward system that has saved 3.33 tonnes of CO2 and 16,938 miles in just six months. Stuart Jensen, Head of Reward and Analytics at Encirc, stated that sustainability is at the core of their operations, and the car-sharing initiative has helped them significantly reduce emissions during the commute to work.

Julie Furnell, Managing Director of Mobilityways, applauded the winners for their efforts in making commuting greener, healthier, and more efficient. She noted the transformative power of sustainable commuting solutions, from reducing emissions to improving the health, wealth, and happiness of employees. Furnell expressed excitement in celebrating their success and inspiring others to follow suit.

According to Mobilityways, Scope 3 commuting emissions account for 5% of the UK’s total carbon footprint, which amounts to 18 billion kilograms of CO2e annually. As more workplaces encourage a return to the office, reducing the environmental impact of commuting is crucial in achieving ambitious net-zero targets.

Mobilityways, a social enterprise and technology company, was founded as Liftshare in 1998 and launched in 2021 to support employers in meeting their net-zero goals. Their suite of climate tech tools enables companies to measure, reduce, and report their commuter emissions, providing full visibility of commuting challenges and identifying sustainable travel alternatives for employees.
