“Two UK supermarket suppliers have issued a recall for their products due to a potential risk of E.coli contamination, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA). This announcement comes after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported an outbreak of E.coli that has resulted in hospitalizations.
The recalled products, which include sandwiches and wraps from Boots, Asda, Tesco, Co-op, Aldi, Sainsbury’s, and Amazon, were supplied by Greencore and Samworth Brothers Manton Wood. Other manufacturers are expected to issue their own recalls in the near future.
The FSA has identified the source of the potential contamination as “a small number of salad leaf products used in sandwiches, wraps, subs, and rolls.” Symptoms of E.coli infection can include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and fever. In some cases, it can lead to serious complications such as kidney failure.
Trish Mannes from the UKHSA advises those who become ill to follow the guidance provided by NHS.uk and to practice good hygiene by washing their hands and disinfecting surfaces. It is also recommended that those who may be infected avoid preparing food for others and refrain from attending work or school until 48 hours after symptoms have ceased.
The UKHSA reports that cases of E.coli have nearly doubled in the past week, with a total of 211 cases and an expected increase as testing continues. Based on 160 cases, 42% of individuals have required hospital treatment.
Last week, the UKHSA announced that the outbreak was linked to a “nationally distributed food item,” but did not disclose further details. E.coli bacteria are typically harmless and can be found in the intestines of humans and animals, but certain strains, such as the Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC), can cause serious illness.
Consumers are advised to check the full list of recalled products, which includes various sandwiches, wraps, and salads, with use-by dates up to and including 16 June 2024. Asda and Tesco have stated that customers can return the products for a full refund.
The Gym Kitchen, which supplies the Peri Peri Chicken Chilled Wrap, is also included in the recall. The FSA advises consumers to dispose of the products or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The FSA and UKHSA continue to investigate the outbreak and are working with the companies involved to ensure the safety of consumers. Any further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.”
